Dimming module
An additional component to the system is a module to enable dimming; this is fitted internally in the luminaire.
The module interfaces with and applies control to an electronic dimmable ballast. Initially this is a 0-10V DC control, which is a common input for such ballasts, although support for other interfaces will also be developed e.g the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) protocol.
The module uses short range, bi-directional mains communications (also known as "power line communications" or PLC) to receive the dimming control instruction from the telecell.
An important feature of this implementation is that the internal module works with a standard telecell. In this way the internal module could be retro-fitted at a later stage if dimming becomes required after an initial installation of the Telensa system. Another important aspect of this approach is that the module (or variants of the module with different interfaces) could be used with different electronic dimmable ballasts i.e. the user is not required to implement proprietary or specific ballasts.
