Marketing Manager

Smart cities are one of the hottest innovation and growth areas.  Within this segment, city leaders see smart streetlighting as the key technology, partly because it is the single biggest contributor to lowering public electricity bills and CO2 emissions, but also as it is a key enabler for future solutions such as 5G and Intelligent Transport which need access to street light columns.

Telensa, with its Cambridge HQ is the clear market leader around the world in this area with more streetlights connected than any other vendor.  We are active in the UK, US, Canada, Middle East, SE Asia, Latin America and Australia/NZ.

We aim to keep that world leading success as well as to continue our expansion into new business areas.  Key to this is a clear marketing strategy that gets the benefits of smart lighting in front of as many city decision makers as possible encouraging them to engage with our sales team.

As a result, we are looking for a dynamic marketing manager who can own and deliver our marketing message in an engaging manner to a global customer base.

Purpose & Scope

Reporting to the VP of Products, Partners and Marketing, the Marketing Manager will share our passion to bring technology to bear on climate change and making cities better places to live.  The core of this role is the ability to communicate the benefits of sophisticated technology to a broad and often non-technical audience.

The post is varied and challenging but gives the applicant the ability to shape the complete marketing mix and to increase their skills across many different areas including online, social and physical events.  You will need to quickly acquire an in-depth understanding of our industry segment and associated technologies, working closely with the product management and sales teams.  Good relationship management and communication is vital to this role. You will need to be comfortable talking to customers, as well as building and maintaining relationships with external influencers.

You will need to generate content yourself as well as to manage external agencies.  As a result, the ideal candidate will have a mix of project management, writing, design and presentation skills.  This mix of skills is ideally suited to a candidate with a broad range of experience or who is willing to get “stuck in” across the board.  Success is measured by sales lead generation, so the key attribute is a desire to achieve results that make a real difference to the business.

The Job Role

This is a broad role that combines market and technology understanding with the ability to communicate.


Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and deliver marketing campaigns including value propositions and messages
  • Develop market-facing content and assets to support demand generation and awareness campaigns
  • Managing the rolling set of press releases, social and other media
  • Develop optimised product positioning and messaging for specific markets and audiences
  • Enable lead-generation integrated with sales tools
  • Engage key market influencers (including media and analysts) through briefings and other channels
  • Understand market trends and the competitive landscape


This is a varied role, ideally suited to a generalist rather than someone with in-depth experience of only one area of marketing.

  • Experience of working in a technology firm
  • Willingness to cover the complete marketing mix
  • Proven ability to write copy for marketing assets, including advertising, presentations and blogs
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • A creative, inventive outlook and the ability to articulate and implement your ideas
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Ability to build close-knit relationships with outside agencies
  • Flexible and able to multi-task
