Project led by SSEC will convert 28,000 streetlights to LEDs with central controls
Cambridge, UK 1st July 2020: Telensa, the world leader in smart street lighting and smart city applications, today announced that it has been selected by SSEC to deliver wireless streetlight controls and central management system to Swindon Borough Council. In a project led by SSEC, Swindon will replace 28,000 streetlights with highly efficient Light Emitting Diodes (LED), which will be wirelessly connected and managed using Telensa’s PLANet system. This upgrade will enable the Council to remotely control lighting levels to save both energy and maintenance costs.
The deployment will begin in July and is due for completion in November 2021. Important in its own right, this project also adds to a regional innovation cluster of smart street lighting deployments. Swindon’s project, when taken together with established systems in surrounding authorities Gloucester, Wiltshire and West Berkshire, adds up to nearly 150,000 streetlights under wireless control.
Telensa PLANet is an end-to-end intelligent street lighting system, consisting of wireless nodes connecting individual lights, a dedicated wireless network and a central management system. PLANet maximises the benefits of LEDs, pays for itself in reduced energy and maintenance costs, improves quality of service through automatic fault reporting, and turns streetlight poles into hubs for smart city sensors. With more than 1.8 million lights connected, Telensa PLANet is the world’s most popular connected streetlight system.
“Towns and cities across the South West are increasingly adopting wireless control systems for their streetlights to achieve a smarter, more efficient environment for their citizens”, said Will Gibson, founder and Chief Commercial Officer at Telensa. “I’m delighted to be supporting SSE Contracting, a leading innovator in street lighting solutions, to deliver this project.”
“We have chosen Telensa to support with the delivery of the Central Management System commitment. Telensa have extensive experience working with asset management systems, which complements our delivery commitments. said Stephen Paye, Contract Manager on the project, SSE Enterprise Contracting. We are looking forward to them working with us to support the successful completion of this project.”
