Berg Insight Names Telensa the Global Leader in Smart Street Lighting in Comprehensive Study

Research undertaken by IoT analyst suggests installations will soar to 31.2 million by 2023

Cambridge, UK 15th April 2020, Telensa today announced that it has been named as the world’s top vendor of smart street lighting in a study undertaken by leading Internet of Things (IoT) analyst, Berg Insight. The Q3-2019 report, Smart Cities: Connected Public Spaces, analysed the latest developments in the global smart street lighting, smart parking, smart waste management and smart city surveillance markets and found that, Telensa is the leading smart street lighting vendor with an installed base of nearly 1.8 million lighting controls, accounting for a global market share of 14.4%.

“The street lighting market is entering a new era of competition in which success will be determined by the ability of companies to establish themselves as competitive providers of communications and management platforms for smart city devices,” said Levi Östling, analyst at Berg Insight. “This is an area in which Telensa have made great strides, partnering with companies such as Microsoft, Samsung and Qualcomm to deliver a holistic smart city platform solution to cities including sensor-based data processing and analytics.”

Telensa PLANet is an end-to-end intelligent street lighting system, consisting of wireless nodes connecting individual lights, a dedicated wireless network owned by the city, and a central management application. The system maximises the benefits of LEDs, pays for itself in reduced energy and maintenance costs, improves quality of service through automatic fault reporting, and enables the aggregation and visualization of sensor data from multiple networks.

“In addition to the environmental and cost-efficiency benefits, smart street lighting offers a simple, scalable solution that can provide a foundation for smart city infrastructure,” said Brent Hudson, CEO at Telensa. “Telensa has grown to become the global market leader by providing an energy-efficient, scalable solution that is flexible to the evolving needs of the urban and rural environment.”

The research suggests that the installed base of smart streetlights will see a CAGR of 24.5% to reach 31.2 million globally in 2023.

Telensa is behind the world’s largest smart street lighting deployment in the US, and has been awarded significant new city and regional projects over the last year, including in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, UAE and South East Asia
